UNOC3 Nice - June 2025
π What a moment in Nice!
Last week at #UNOC3, we hosted our Surfer Scientists side event β and the response was fantastic.
Together with an inspiring group of global partners, ocean tech innovators, and local voices, we explored how surf ecosystems are powerful, yet often overlooked, drivers of social inclusion, blue economy growth, and environmental data collection.
We also highlighted that surf ecosystems β where waves break over coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove-lined coasts β are nature-based solutions. They buffer storm surges, store carbon, and support some of the worldβs richest marine biodiversity.
π₯ We presented our prototype ocean sensors
π§ͺ We shared the GEDSI-informed model behind Surfer Scientists
π€ We connected with partners from SAEON, EMODnet, A Liquid Future, and The University of Western Australia
π And we celebrated surf culture as a global movement β one that spans coastlines from CΓ΄te dβIvoire to Indonesia
Huge thanks to David Whyte (MaREI/UCC), Gorringe Patrick (EMODnet), Ana Manero (UWA), and Juliet Hermes (SAEON) for sharing their expertise, energy, and vision.
The overall feeling at UNOC3 was one of collaboration and momentum β and the connections we made there will carry this work forward in powerful ways. A chance encounter with Sylvia Earle was an unforgettable highlight π«
This is just the beginning. Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared, and surfed the momentum with us. ππ Hereβs to doing lots more - together.
