Pan-CLIVAR Meeting 2025 & CLIVAR Symposium: Bridging Science and Society in Southeast Asia and Beyond
π The Human Current in Ocean Science π
Last week at #PanCLIVAR in Bali, we hosted a #SurferScientists workshop β and it was an inspiring reminder of what happens when science meets passion and community.
Together with SAEON Juliet Hermes, Jethan D'Hotman, SMHI Gorringe Patrick and with the amazing support of #RipCurlIndonesia, we explored how surfing and surfers can act as a living bridge between science and society β a global community of more than 35 million people connected by the ocean and driven by deep passion. π
π Using accessible ocean technologies like the Surf Sense sensor, we demonstrated how surf sessions can generate valuable nearshore data β helping to close coastal data gaps, protect marine resources for local benefit, and inform decision-making from the community level all the way to global frameworks.
π± At its heart, Surfer Scientists is about enabling young people to connect their passion for the ocean with science in a relatable, hands-on way β creating impact that benefits their communities locally and contributes globally.
π€ Itβs a two-way exchange: science reaching communities, and communities enriching science β built on participation, shared purpose, and genuine care for the sea.
π Many thanks to everyone who joined us for the discussions, ideas, and new friendships formed.
These connections remind us that lasting ocean solutions start with people β and grow through shared purpose.
