New beginnings in Mapadegat. Whooo!

The beautiful bay at Mapadegat located at the capital of the Mentawai Islands, Tuapejat on the island of Sipora is A Liquid Future’s new location and we are oh so stoked! After some difficult decisions earlier in the year we have a new project and a new building with programs set to start in February 2015. Yew!

The local community are thrilled with the news and eager to start for things to get underway, often asking “Kapan mulai? Kapan mulai?” (When does it begin?). Mapadegat has a fledgling surf community and a handful of homestays (losmens) catering to the surfers that base themselves here hoping to score Telescopes, one of the Mentawais’ most sort after waves, known for its perfection but also its rarity. 

The capital Tuapejat is a rapidly growing place. A new fast ferry now transports people in 3 hours from Padang, Sumatra to Tuapejat three times a week. With the aim of supporting the locals with their needs and wants of remaining on their land, being a part of and influential in the changes that are coming and preserving and even reviving their native culture, English is a basic necessity, a string to their bow that will give this the best chance.
