Our Future Waves

A new project with Australian partner Oceanwise has started in Morotai! Combining ALF’s social approach to marine conservation with Oceanwise’s scientific know-how, Our Future Waves is a Reef and Coastline Health monitoring programme with a difference.  Rather than outside scientific research teams arriving to collect data, our project is led by ALF’s Morotai team who are training surf club members to; use a camera for scientific data collection, mobile apps /tech to record and upload data,  create geospatial data maps of surf breaks, and share data sets to local government departments.  By doing so the project addresses the problem of ineffective MPAs in Indonesia with one of the main reasons being due to lack of community buy-in.  The main aim of the project is to have surf breaks protected and under the stewardship a youthful, passionate, informed and knowledgeable sector of society.  We are striving for a future that waves hello and not goodbye……
