Morotai Surf Centres

Two boys on the beaches of Morotai, with their handmade wooden surfboards.

The Morotai Government demonstrates its support and understanding of the potential of surfing and surf tourism to the island and its people by building two community surf centres!

What better buy-in is there from a Regency Government than building and equipping two surfing centres for local communities. We are thrilled to see this step from Morotai’s Government who we have been working closely with over the last four years.  Morotai’s first ever surf competition earlier in the year organised by ALF, provided the perfect showcase for the Regency Government departments to experience first-hand the passion local communities have for surfing and the appeal of it as a spectator sport, and for tourism purposes. They have acted very quickly on this experience and there are now two equipped community surf centres on the island.  With COVID exerting a huge drain on government budgets over the last year, to see government prioritising these centres also illustrates their understanding of the role surf tourism can play in a post pandemic recovery. Right on Morotai!
